Winery Wednesdays: Wine is closer than you think...

When you think of Washington D.C. what are some of the first things that come to mind?

The White House?

The Lincoln Memorial?

House of Cards?

Scandal?

Wine, anyone?

To be fair, wine is on my mind pretty much all the time, but today I want to showcase a winery that is less than 25 miles from our nation's capitol. Every Washingtonian needs to move this to the very top of your "To Do" List. We're talking ABOVE "Run to the grocery store-" The Winery at Bull Run has everything you need.

Part of the working winery farm at The Winery at Bull Run

Adjacent to the Manassas National Battlefield and a quick 30 minute drive West on I66, John and Kim Hickox opened The Winery at Bull Run in 2012. Winemakers Chris Pearmund and Ashton Lough make the wine here as well as at Pearmund Cellars and Vint Hill Craft Winery. (All three of these wineries are top-notch in no small part to the incredible talents of Chris and Ashton.)

For $14 you get a souvenir wine glass and taste 8 rotating wines (4 white and 4 red) and, on weekdays, you can add a taste of an additional wine for $1. The staff members at Bull Run are extremely knowledgeable and really work to help you find a wine you'll love.

The Wines: Summer Sips

The Delaney (a semi-sweet white blend named for the owner's first born daughter) is the perfect "porch wine" on a hot, summer's day. If you're looking for something a bit drier, the 2015 Riesling was just released and is lovely. For those of you looking for a lighter-style red to drink in the heat of August, the Long Tom Red is the way to go. A delightful blend of Chambourcin and Petit Verdot, I would serve this red with a bit of a chill.

* The Winery at Bull Run's 2014 Meritage is probably my current favorite here. It is a summer sipper, it is a winter sipper. I would never say "no" to this wine! Delicious!!

Alright- so this winery is a hop, skip, and jump away from D.C. and has fabulous wine. I must not forget to mention that it is very family friendly! They love kids (as you will see below) and have 2 VERY large outdoor areas to accommodate both families with children and guests over 21 only.
